Purim Grogger

The book of Esther in the Old Testament tells the story of the Jewish people being saved from their Persian rulers. The villain in the story is Haman, the king’s advisor. When he appears in a play or in storytelling it is traditional to use a ‘grogger’ or noisemaker to drown out his name.

How to Make

  1. Glue the end of a wooden craft stick onto a coaster. Position the stick 3-4cm inside the coaster to make a handle about 8cm long, like a lollipop. Turn the coaster over then glue another stick on the other side, above the first one.
Leave to dry then wrap masking tape around the sticks to cover the gap down the middle.
  2. Cut out a 30cm circle from white A4 card the cut it in half to make 2 semi-circles. Curl one of the semi-circles into a cone shape. Hold the pointed end of the cone in the middle of your hand to adjust the size. When the cone is the same size as the coaster, stick the edge with tape. Make another cone in the same way.
  3. Place one of the cones upside down in a cup or mug. Tip a small handful of dried beans or peas inside. Place the wooden coaster with the handle flat on top of the cone so the circle edges match up. Stick the cone onto the coaster with strips of masking tape. Lift the cone with beans out of the cup with the handle attached. Fill the second cone with dried beans in the same way then tape it to the other side of the coaster.
  4. Tear or cut tissue paper pieces to cover the cones. Brush glue over the card and paste down the tissue. Leave to dry standing up in a cup or jar. Cover the handle with tissue paper. Leave to dry.
  5. Paste strips or shapes of patterned paper onto the shaker as decoration. Paste thin strips of patterned paper around the handle. Leave to dry.

Top Tip

It’s easier to work on one side of the shaker at a time. Brush glue over one half, paste the tissue on top then let it dry before covering the other side. Hold the handle or sit the shaker on a jar or cup to stop it rolling.
