How to Make

  1. Open the notebook onto a page and position it horizontally on a flat surface. Sketch out a music note in pencil, making it large enough to fill the page, as shown.
  2. Draw dots with black pen at key points in the note, use the picture as a guide if needs be. Or, to make it easier, you can print out musical notes on a computer and trace over them by placing the image under the page.
  3. Once you’ve drawn out the dots, take an eraser and rub out the pencil lines. Repeat for other music notes and symbols, doing one to a page, then draw on horizontal lines and multiple notes per page. Leave blank pages, so as they advance they can draw out the notes from memory.
  4. Now you can hand over the notebook and encourage a budding musician to start drawing out the musical notes following the dot to dots.

Top Tip

If you think the lines might be a distraction, stick a rectangle of white paper onto each page before drawing out the dot-dot. This won't work with any tracing, so bear that in mind.
