How to Make

  1. Draw template shapes for a lantern and a star onto white card. Make the lantern 14cm x 8cm cm and the star 8cm diameter. For symmetrical shapes, draw half a lantern and a star onto folded card. Cut out the templates.
  2. Draw around the templates to make repeat shapes onto pieces of rainbow coloured card then cut them out. Make 6-8 shapes in different colours. Cut out patterned paper pieces to decorate the lanterns and stars. Choose patterns and colours to contrast with the plain coloured card. Stick the cut out patterns onto the lanterns and stars. Punch a hole in the top of each shape.
  3. Cut a long piece of rainbow cord for hanging the decorations. Use 2 metres in length to hang 6 card shapes with rattan balls on one string. To attach the rattan balls, push one end of the cord through the edge of a ball, push the ball 20cm along the cord then tie it in place. Attach the next ball 10-12cm from the first one. Keep adding more balls until you reach 20cm from the end of the cord, leaving roughly the same length of cord (10-12cm) between each ball.
  4. Thread short pieces of cord through the punched holes on the lanterns and stars, tie the ends around the hanging cord with tight knots to hold the shapes in place. Slide the knots along the string so the shapes are evenly spaced between the rattan balls. If the shapes slide down the string, add a blob of glue to hold them in place. Tie loops at both ends of the cord to hang up the decoration.
