How to Make

  1. Print out the hat template and cut it out with scissors. Draw around the template onto the back of some self-adhesive felt and cut it out. Place to one side for later.
  2. Measure and cut two pieces of wool about 10cms long and place to one side. To make the head, wrap yellow wool around four of your fingers about fifteen times. Carefully slide it from your fingers and use one of the prepared wool pieces to tie it together at the top in a knot. Measure about 4.5cms from the top (where your knot is) and wrap the second piece of wool here. Tie it in a knot to make the neck. Use scissors to snip through the looped wool at the bottom and to neaten it up.
  3. If you wish to add plaits to your scarecrow, measure and cut 6 pieces of wool 20cms long. Gather them together and tie a knot in the middle. Plait from each side of the knot and secure at the bottoms with more wool. Use glue to stick your plaits to the top of the head.
  4. Peel the backing from your hat, fold into shape and then place it over the head. Cut a small 1cm square of felt to make a patch and stick this to the front of the hat.
  5. Peel and stick two wiggle eyes to your scarecrow’s face and then cut out a small mouth from black felt and stick it on.
  6. Add two or three self-adhesive buttons to a coloured craft stick and then poke the stick through the base of the neck and into the head to finish.

Top Tip

Ask a friend to tie the knot at the top of the scarecrow’s head while it’s still on your fingers if it’s a bit tricky!
