Pom Pom Blue Tit

How to Make

  1. Cut a piece of blue wool roughly 20cm long and put to the side. This will be used to tie the pom pom together.
  2. To make the pom pom body, open up the medium orange pom pom maker and wrap blue wool around one of the semi circles. The more layers added the bigger and fluffier the pom pom will be.
  3. On the other semi circle, wrap blue wool at the bottom of both ends. Wrap the remainder of the semi circle with lots of layers of yellow wool as shown.
  4. Close the pom pom maker and cut the wool down the gap through the middle of the pom pom maker.
  5. Using the 20cm long piece of wool set aside earlier, tie it tightly in the gap where you cut through the middle of the pom pom maker to secure the pom pom with a double knot.
  6. Remove the pom pom maker to reveal the pom pom. Trim the pom pom to make a neat fluffy shape for the bird’s body.
  7. To make the head of the bird, firstly cut a piece of blue wool roughly 20cm long and put to the side.
  8. Open up the small green pom pom maker and wrap blue wool around one of the semi-circles adding lots of layers.
  9. On the other semi-circle, wrap a few layers of white wool roughly 1.5cm wide. Then wrap the remainder of the semi-circle with layers of blue wool.
  10. Close the pom pom maker and cut the wool down the gap through the middle of the pom pom maker.
  11. Using the 20cm long piece of wool set aside earlier, tie it tightly in the gap where you cut through the middle of the pom pom maker to secure the pom pom with a double knot.
  12. Remove the pom pom maker to reveal the pom pom. Trim the pom pom to make a neat fluffy shape for the bird’s head. The white section will be at the front for the Blue Tit’s markings around its eyes.
  13. Place a blob of super tacky glue onto the top of the Blue Tit’s body and stick on the Blue Tit’s head. Squish down in place for 1 minute and leave to dry.
  14. Cut out 2 small black circles and a small triangle shape from black felt for the Blue Tit’s eyes and beak. Apply a tiny amount of super tacky glue and stick the eyes onto the front of the Blue Tit’s head onto the white markings and the beak just below. Leave to dry.
  15. Download the template and print. Use the template to cut out the bird’s tail and wings from a sheet of blue felt. Cut out the shapes and apply a blob of super tacky glue to the top end of the tail and stick it to the back of the Blue Tit. Hold in place for 1 minute and then leave to dry. Apply a blob of super tacky glue to the wings and stick to either side of the bird, holding in place for 1 minute and then leave to dry.

Top Tip

Although a pom pom maker is the easiest way to make this project, you can still make the blue tit using the traditional cardboard method in two different sizes.
