How to Make

  1. To make a crescent moon shape, place a small paper plate on top of of a large plate then draw around the edge. Cut out the moon.
  2. Put 2 or 3 metallic paint colours into a tray then paint the reverse side (white side) of the moon with pieces of sponge. Leave to dry then paint the reverse side. Lightly brush around the edges of the plate with gold.
  3. Paint some rattan stars with gold metallic paint. Leave to dry. Use a small brush to paint inside the stars, or leave them natural if you prefer.
  4. To make a painted pattern on the moon use a paper doily as a stencil. Place the doily over the moon then lightly sponge paint through the holes. Carefully lift up the doily then re-position it to make more patterns in the same way. Repeat on the reverse side. Leave to dry then stick gems on the moon on both sides.
  5. Punch a hole near the top of the moon. Thread a 40cm piece of thin ribbon through the hole then tie it into a loop to hang.
  6. Cut thin pieces of ribbon to hang the stars. Tie the ribbon ends through the top of the stars with a knot. Attach the other ends on the back of the moon with sticky tape. It’s easier to position the stars with the moon hanging up.
Glue a matching painted cut out moon shape made from another plate onto the reverse side for added strength and to cover the ends of the ribbons where the stars are attached.
Paint the coloured side of the plate this time so the crescent shape fits to the first one.

Top Tip

Gold stencil patterns show up more clearly on a darker coloured area of paint, like blue or purple.
