How to Make

  1. Cut some white card into A5 or small strips. Fill a tray 3cm deep with water then add a drop of marbling ink to prime the surface. Let the ink spread out then place a piece of scrap paper into the tray and lift it off. You are now ready to start.
  2. Using the dropper bottles apply 2 or 3 drops of ink onto the surface of the water. Let the colours spread out then stir into patterns with a fork or lolly stick, or gently blow the paint with a straw.
  3. Carefully place a sheet of paper into the tray, leave for a few seconds, then lift it up and lay it flat to dry. Take another print in the same way of there is still some colour in the tray.
  4. Before starting with new colours, you can lift excess paint from the tray using a piece of scrap paper to clean the surface.
  5. When the marbled paper is completely dry, cut out some planet shapes. You could draw round a small saucer, cup, jar lid or a bottle top as a guide for different sizes.
  6. Glue the planets onto a black paper plate. To make the picture appear more 3D, only glue one side of the planets stuck around the edge of the plate, leaving the other side floating above the middle area of the plate. Add some glitter stars around the planets.
  7. Dot some tiny blobs of glue onto picture with the end of a brush, sprinkle with glitter and shake off any excess. Tape a piece of ribbon to the top of the plate to hang the picture.

Top Tip

Always wear overalls. Before you start, prepare an area where the pieces of papers can dry, sheets of newspaper or a big sheet of plastic is ideal for this. Keep some paper towel handy too.
